Job Summary:

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Organizational Development, the Talent Acquisition Specialist will drive the creation of a recruitment strategy that helps leaders throughout the institution identify, select and onboard new employees. The successful candidate will ensure an effective and reliable recruitment process that identifies candidates who are aligned with the technical as well as behavioral expectations of McMaster.

Key Accountabilities:

  • While ensuring legislative, collective agreement, policy and best practice compliance within the recruitment portfolio, the Talent Acquisition Specialist will develop, promote, implement, or coordinate recruitment programming and services, to attract, and engage employees at McMaster University.
  • Provide expert advice in talent acquisition and recruitment and be an impartial resource.
  • Work with hiring managers, leaders, selection committees, and HR partners, to provide a broad range of client focused guidance and consultative service around recruitment and selection.
  • Develop an employee value proposition and be a key driver to maintain preferred employer status.
  • Assess and anticipate future staffing demands (prioritizing hard to fill roles) and develop proactive recruitment strategies.
  • Work with units across the University to support equity-focused recruitment initiatives and procedures.
  • Define and implement a recruitment and selection strategy and service delivery model.
  • Develop a digital/social media plan including multiple social media channels.
  • Draft procedures and guidelines, keeping in mind the employment equity goals of the University.
  • Develop and review recruitment programming and related tools from an employment equity perspective for all relevant employee groups.
  • Lead the development of an exit interview strategy and survey tool. Conduct exit interviews for employees as required.
  • Lead the pilot launch of an internal agency that services McMaster University’s interim employee hiring needs.
  • Facilitate or support selection committees as required.
  • Develop a central onboarding program for new employees in support of the university’s goals and objectives.
  • Deliver training on equitable recruitment practices and programming to educate, guide and support hiring managers and equity advisors.
  • Conduct ongoing evaluation and measurement with departments to improve the recruitment process.
  • Provide support to central HR units with staffing related data collection and analysis functions to support effective human resource planning.
  • Understand management requirements and accordingly build tools and reports to track, analyze and improve hiring efforts, measure employee acquisition effectiveness and focus on continuous improvement.
  • Keep abreast of trends and innovative recruiting techniques in order to be competitive in state-of-the-art recruiting practices.
  • Ensure all recruitment policies, practices and programs are documented, administered, and implemented in accordance with employment equity legislative requirements.

Education and Experience:

  • University degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in a leadership role in a related field, with preference given to those with experience in employment equity in a University environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable legislation and experience working with equity-seeking communities is essential.
  • Strong communication, decision making skills and possesses good judgement.
  • Excellent presentation, facilitation and public speaking skills.
  • Sound knowledge of recruitment, selection and testing practices.
  • Sound knowledge of general Human Resource management practices, policies and trends, knowledge of current employment legislation, e.g., Employment Equity.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and team-oriented skills.
  • Broad knowledge of institutional structures, policy, regulations and administrative systems in University or equivalent context.
  • High degree of political acuity and judgment.
